Every customer wants "good quality."
But what defines a truly high-quality translation? Is it simply having every word of the original accurately reflected in the final document?
Many translation providers rely on this as their measure of quality, but at Blue-J, we believe that this alone is not enough. Below, we explain our approach to the three essential elements of a quality translation.
The translation must accurately reflect all the information in the original document, with no errors in interpretation or careless omissions.
This does not necessarily mean that there will be a word-for-word correlation between the two documents. In some cases, a single word or phrase may require more explanation to ensure clarity in the target language. In other cases, two words or phrases can be effectively combined into one, and still convey the meaning correctly.
To devote attention to the words alone would be to neglect the goal of translating; namely, “Communicating the writer’s message to the reader.”
At times, the words as they appear in the original document may not sufficiently convey the intent of that message in the target language, either because of cultural differences, or because the writer has assumed some background knowledge that the reader may not have. We endeavor to “fill in the gaps,” keeping in mind both the writer’s goal and the reader’s circumstances.
A well written translation ensures that both the content and intent of your message reach the readers intact.
Errors in grammar or punctuation can lead to uncertainty about the meaning of a sentence, and, in more serious cases, can alter the meaning entirely. Even seemingly minor errors can distract the reader from the task at hand, and detract from the message you want to convey. Strong writing inspires confidence in your words, and in your company as well.
At Blue-J, we believe that the translator should be invisible. If the readers feel that the document is the original, and not a translation, then we have achieved our goal.
In order to further ensure the quality of the final product, we keep the lines of communication open, to clarify and resolve any issues either during the translation process or after the document has been delivered.
